Menorca
Menorca is the second by area
island
of
Balearic
archipelago in
, located in its northeast part. Despite of its affinity to
Mallorca
, it has a lot of peculiar features. Northern coast of the island is rocky, with stone and reddish sandy beaches. The southern coast is formed by ravines – they are damp sites with the special microclimate and characteristic flora and fauna.
Menorca
is one of most deserted. There are two types of architecture. On the one hand, it is completely white houses typical for Mediterranean region, and on the other hand - English style buildings, which certify the various stages of the British presence on the island. There are a lot of archeological monuments which are referred to so called Tailot culture of the bronze century. There are about 1600 places with the megaliths rests in
Menorca
. One of major places of megaliths is Torre d'Gaumes, near Cales Coves. Here are caves of the Neolithic age, hollowed in rocky breed, at which presently live people who propose alternative ways of life.
For tourists
Menorca
is a unique place. On the one hand, Menorca is considered one of the most expensive and fashionable resorts of
, and on the other hand – there are no huge hotel complexes, which are typical to the Mediterranean coasts. UNESCO announced
Menorca
the international biosphere resource, and therefore announced a ban to build high buildings (only 2 5-storied complexes are still kept, because they were built prior to the UNESCO’s decision). Organized excursions, which are usual on Mallorca, are rear on
Menorca
. The life here is much quieter, than for instance on
Ibiza
.
the island has two capitals: historical - Ciutadella and official - Mao. Мао became the main city in the XVIII century during the English government, which lasted for 80 years. The five-kilometer Mao bay was a strategic control point of the entire island by the British armies.
Except for famous megaliths on an island, there are a lot of other interesting monuments and places, which deserve to be visited. 10 km to the north from Es Mercadal, in northeast of the island, there is Fornells, piscatory village, each summer it is becomes a beautiful resort place, the harbour is filled by yachts, and Palma bar is the place for Spanish beau monde. There is English sentry tower there. The favourite Fornells dish is caldereta de llagosta, a soup made of crawfishes. 10 km to the south from charming Ferreries village, there is Santa Galdana bay with popular walking routes and silent beaches. To the west from Cap de Cavelleria there are rests of Phoenician village Sanitgie. Along the coast here are nice, but remote beaches – Cala Pregonda, Cala del Pilar, La Vall d’Algaiarens.
Another thing on Menorca is purchasing of local souvenirs and subjects of traditional crafts, first of all "avarkes" (in
they are called Menorcinas), traditional leather hand made sandals, now many fashionable designers use their pattern form.
Menorca
is also the native place for Jaime Mascaro, famous Spanish trade mark.
